Description

Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust (BHRUT) is seeking an experienced and visionary leader to serve as Chair. This is an exciting opportunity to guide a vital healthcare organisation through a period of transformation, ensuring that high-quality, compassionate care is delivered to the diverse communities we serve across North East London. As Chair, you will lead the Trust through strategic challenges while helping shape the future of healthcare in one of the most dynamic regions in the UK.

BHRUT operates two main hospitals, Queen’s Hospital in Romford and King George Hospital in Ilford, providing care for over 750,000 people across Barking, Havering, Redbridge, and parts of Essex. The Trust offers a full range of acute services, including a renowned cancer centre, specialist stroke services, and a hyper-acute stroke unit. We are committed to delivering high-quality care, focusing on innovation and continuous improvement in clinical services.

Our vision is to provide outstanding healthcare for all, reducing health inequalities and improving the overall wellbeing of our local communities. With strong links to local universities and research institutions, we are driving forward our academic health ambitions, while focusing on patient safety, performance improvement, and financial sustainability.

Within all of this, working with a range of partners to drive key transformation and change to provide the integrated care services that our populations needs now, and for the future, is a key part of our vision and ambitions and we are part of the North East London Integrated Care System to join up care for our communities.

As Chair, you will provide strategic leadership to the Board of Directors, ensuring that the Trust delivers its vision and remains aligned with the values of the NHS. Working closely with the Chief Executive, you will guide the Trust through complex challenges such as population growth, increasing demand for services, and workforce sustainability. Throughout, you will champion high standards of care and governance, ensuring that the Trust navigates these challenges with a clear commitment to patient well-being.

Your key responsibilities will include providing effective leadership to the Board, fostering a culture of accountability, transparency, and innovation. You will ensure that the Trust meets its strategic objectives, including patient safety, financial sustainability, and performance targets, while also advocating for the Trust with local, regional, and national stakeholders. A significant part of your role will involve promoting diversity, inclusion, and equality throughout the Trust’s work, as well as supporting partnerships with external organisations such as local authorities, universities, and the wider healthcare system.

We are seeking a Chair who can inspire confidence and lead with integrity. You will have significant experience at board level, ideally within a large and complex public sector organisation. A deep understanding of governance, risk management, and strategic oversight is essential. You will also bring a passion for public service, with a clear commitment to improving healthcare outcomes and addressing the challenges of health inequalities.

Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust is committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion and encourages applications from all sections of the community.

Join us in leading the future of healthcare in North East London.
